How Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is transforming student futures through the Brooklyn STEAM Center
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation continues to demonstrate the powerful impact of hands-on, career-connected education through its Brooklyn STEAM Center, providing students with meaningful pathways to success in high-demand industries. With support from the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, the program expanded its reach and deepened its impact during the 2024–2025 academic year.
Serving over 300 students from eight public high schools, the Brooklyn STEAM Center exceeded key benchmarks across enrollment, retention, and graduation. Notably, 99% of seniors completed the full two-year program, and 100% graduated having participated in paid internships or work-based learning experiences—ensuring every student gained real-world exposure before leaving high school. Additionally, more than 80% of graduates earned at least one industry-recognized credential, strengthening their readiness for both college and career opportunities.
Through daily project-based learning, professional skill development, and consistent mentorship, students build both technical expertise and the soft skills needed to thrive in today’s workforce.
A standout feature of the program is its robust network of industry partnerships. Students engaged in hands-on experiences across sectors such as cybersecurity, construction, robotics, publishing, and sustainable energy. From analyzing cyber threats with major publishers to designing solar power solutions and building furniture, students applied classroom knowledge to real-world challenges—gaining confidence and clarity about their future careers.
The program’s success extends beyond graduation. Within six months, 100% of students were either enrolled in higher education, advanced training programs, or employed in high-demand, high-wage industries—an extraordinary outcome that underscores the effectiveness of this model.
Looking ahead, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is poised for even greater impact. With expanded facilities and growing enrollment, the Brooklyn STEAM Center will soon serve up to 600 students across a wide range of career pathways, including culinary arts, engineering, multimedia production, and computer technology.
