With Support from the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, Miami University's Robotics Program Exceeds Expectations, Reaching More Than 740 Students Across 40 Schools
The future of engineering is taking shape in classrooms across Southwest Ohio, where students are discovering the excitement of robotics, programming, and innovation—one robot dog at a time!
With support from the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, Miami University's College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) has achieved remarkable success through its Robotics Unleashed – Programming the Future initiative, an innovative STEM outreach program designed to introduce middle school students to the fascinating world of robotics engineering.
What began with an ambitious goal of reaching approximately 500 students has grown into an extraordinary educational success story. The program has now engaged more than 740 students across 40 schools, exceeding its original participation target while inspiring young minds to explore the endless possibilities of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Bringing Robotics to Life—One Robot Dog at a Time
At the heart of the program's success is a classroom set of Petoi Bittle robotic dogs, purchased through funding from the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation.
These interactive robots have transformed traditional STEM instruction into an exciting, hands-on learning experience. Rather than simply learning about engineering concepts, students become programmers and problem-solvers, writing code, testing their ideas, and watching their robotic creations respond to their commands.
The experience has been nothing short of inspiring.
One student proudly shared that they “felt proud when they saw their code actually work and the robot dog move.”
Through these engaging activities, students develop critical thinking skills, strengthen their problem-solving abilities, and gain confidence in their capacity to succeed in STEM-related fields.
Outstanding Results That Speak for Themselves
The program's success extends far beyond its impressive enrollment numbers. Student surveys revealed overwhelmingly positive experiences and measurable gains in STEM confidence and awareness.
Among school participants:
94% enjoyed the robotics program.
93% reported learning about robotics engineering.
80% felt more confident in programming and STEM after participating.
Summer camp participants demonstrated equally encouraging outcomes, with 87% enjoying their experience, 88% learning something new, and 57% reporting increased interest in STEM.
These results highlight the extraordinary value of introducing young students to engineering through interactive, experiential learning.
Educators have also witnessed the excitement firsthand. As one teacher shared:
“The Bittle robotic dogs were a hit with our 6th graders in the Technology Exploration classes. Our students were instantly hooked because the robots look and move like a real dog.”
Opening Doors and Expanding Opportunities
One of the most meaningful achievements of Robotics Unleashed has been its ability to expand access to high-quality STEM education.
By reaching students across 40 schools, including schools serving underserved populations, Miami University has helped introduce robotics engineering to young people who might otherwise have limited opportunities to explore the field.
The program has not only sparked curiosity but has also encouraged students to envision themselves as future engineers, programmers, and innovators.
Perhaps most excitingly, many students were so inspired by their classroom experiences that they enrolled in summer robotics camps to continue developing their skills and exploring their newfound interests.
This enthusiasm demonstrates the lasting impact of early STEM exposure and the importance of providing continued opportunities for young learners to grow.
Inspiring Innovation Beyond the Classroom
The students' creativity has extended well beyond programming robotic dogs.
As they explored the capabilities of their robots, participants began imagining how robotics technology could make a meaningful difference in the world.
Their ideas included developing robotic dogs to assist during natural disasters, guide individuals with visual impairments, provide comfort to people in need, and perform other tasks that benefit their communities.
These thoughtful suggestions reflect one of the program's greatest accomplishments: inspiring students not only to understand technology but to imagine how they can use it to improve lives.
Building on this enthusiasm, Miami University plans to incorporate additional real-world applications into future programming while expanding opportunities for students to advance their robotics skills.
Building a Stronger Future Through STEM Education
The success of Robotics Unleashed has strengthened partnerships among Miami University, local schools, community organizations, and industry partners, creating new opportunities for collaboration and continued STEM engagement throughout Southwest Ohio.
The initiative has also demonstrated how accessible, engaging STEM education can influence students' confidence, aspirations, and understanding of future career possibilities.
As the program continues to evolve, its focus remains on providing meaningful educational experiences that encourage curiosity, perseverance, creativity, and innovation.
Investing in Tomorrow's Engineers and Problem-Solvers
The Glenn W. Bailey Foundation is proud to support Miami University's outstanding efforts to make STEM education more accessible, engaging, and inspiring for young learners.
By providing the resources needed to bring robotics engineering directly into classrooms, the Foundation's support has helped transform an ambitious educational initiative into a thriving program that is exceeding expectations and opening doors for hundreds of students.
With more than 740 students reached, 40 schools engaged, and remarkable gains in STEM confidence and awareness, Robotics Unleashed is a shining example of the power of hands-on education to inspire the next generation.
Congratulations to Miami University's College of Engineering and Computing on the tremendous success of Robotics Unleashed – Programming the Future! and for inspiring the young innovators whose curiosity, creativity, and determination are helping shape a brighter future.
