A New Hub for STEM Success
Norwalk Community College's STEM Lab is empowering students with hands-on resources, expert tutoring, and a collaborative space to thrive.
At CT State Norwalk, a new STEM Lab is already making a remarkable difference in the lives of students pursuing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. Supported by the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, the project has expanded access to high-quality tutoring and created an engaging learning environment designed to help students succeed in some of the college's most challenging courses.
Even before the STEM Lab officially opened its doors in spring 2026, student demand for academic support exceeded expectations. To date, more than 140 students have participated in over 450 tutoring sessions led by professional STEM tutors, demonstrating both the need for and the value of these services.
The new lab has been thoughtfully equipped with collaborative furniture, science models, instructional materials, and specialized STEM software, creating a welcoming space where students can strengthen their understanding of complex subjects while learning alongside their peers.
The impact is already evident. Students who utilized tutoring services achieved an impressive 84% retention rate, with even higher retention among new students and members of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) cohort. Academic performance also improved, with students attending multiple tutoring sessions earning higher average GPAs than those who did not participate.
The most frequently requested tutoring subjects—including nursing, mathematics, chemistry, and biology—highlight the important role the STEM Lab plays in preparing students for careers in high-demand fields that are essential to the future workforce.
As participation continues to grow, CT State Norwalk plans to expand tutoring services, enhance technology resources, and maximize the STEM Lab as a collaborative learning hub that fosters academic achievement and student engagement.
By investing in innovative spaces like the STEM Lab, the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation is helping create opportunities for students to build confidence, strengthen critical STEM skills, and pursue successful futures in education and the workforce.
