Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists at the California Science Center
The California Science Center is opening doors to science for young people through its Community Youth Programs, which provide hands-on STEM experiences for middle and high school students. Designed to spark curiosity and introduce students to science-related careers, these programs help young learners see science as something exciting, accessible, and relevant to their everyday lives.
This year, 324 middle school students participated in the Young Curators Program, where they explored engineering and scientific concepts through engaging activities like building air-powered rockets and experimenting with simple circuits. Inspired by the Science Center’s GAME ON! Science, Sports & Play exhibition, students also discovered the science behind sports, exploring topics such as biomechanics, physics, and materials science. These hands-on experiences helped students better understand how science and innovation shape the world around them.
High school students also gained valuable leadership experience through the Community Teen Program. Fifteen interns helped bring science to life for more than 515,000 Science Center visitors through demonstrations and interactive activities. Along the way, they strengthened their communication skills, participated in workshops on college readiness and personal development, and represented the Science Center at community events such as City of STEM and the LA Maker Faire.
In the summer, students had the opportunity to explore even more specialized areas of science through two exciting internship initiatives. The Flight Team introduced students to the science and engineering of aviation, giving them the chance to learn from industry professionals—including an FAA air traffic controller, airline staff, and aircraft mechanics—and even experience a United Airlines flight to San Francisco to see aviation operations up close.
The newly launched Dive Team immersed students in marine science through SCUBA training, snorkeling excursions, and visits to aquariums and research centers. Their experience culminated in an open-water dive off the shore of Catalina Island, providing students with a memorable introduction to marine ecosystems and careers in ocean science.
Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and real-world exploration, the California Science Center’s Community Youth Programs are inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
